Huila
“Archaeology, dry forest and the upper Magdalena”
Local identity
Huila combines the upper Magdalena River valley, Tatacoa’s dry landscape and archaeological sites around San Agustín and Isnos.
Neiva is the capital. La Tatacoa in Villavieja is an eroded tropical dry-forest landscape commonly called a desert; Cuzco and Los Hoyos have different features. San Agustín Archaeological Park and the Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras sites form part of the department’s southern archaeological heritage.
Culture & traditions
Sanjuanero huilense dance, San Juan and San Pedro festivities, asado huilense, achira biscuits and mountain-grown coffee.
Check the forecast and destination conditions before leaving. Weather varies with altitude and area; confirm opening hours, capacity and protected-area closures.
